Recording acoustic music requires a great sounding live room, nice mics with accurate placement, and professional preamps.

Our approach is to combine a variety of mics and techniques. This gives maximum flexibility for imaging and tone control during the mixing stage.

We record acoustic instruments with as little processing as possible. Its much easier to add than it is to remove effects, EQ, and dynamics processing!

In most cases acoustic ensembles will want to record using live multi-tracking. This means all musicians play at the same time but each has its own mic and channel within the multitrack recording. This allows for the most 'natural' ensemble sound and for players to improvise and react to each other.

With careful mic selection and placement we can get a surprising degree of acoustic isolation for each instrument on the multitrack. Our live room allows for recording acoustic ensembles with up to 20 musicians.

Live Room
Our live room was designed specifically for recording acoustic and amplified electronic instruments. The wood floor gives bright sound characteristics while the walls and cieling combine diffusion and absorption for an even and full acoustic tone. Read more about our live room here.

Miking
A variety of miking techniques can be used to capture the the full range of nuances that make an acoustic performance unique.

Double miking can be used to combine the characteristics of two different types of microphone or to create stereo images.

Additional mics can be placed further away from the musician to record room ambience.

Preamps
Our Sebatron preamp channels can be used for a variety of uses, from crystal clear transparent tones to rich saturated tube color.
